TOPIC: Self-Esteem

Bouncing back from problems is one reason we know healthy self-esteem is such a vital part of a person’s life. It’s the difference between feeling things are your fault or feeling like outside forces have created problems for you, but you can handle it. When we feel as if there is no way for us to successfully handle a situation because of a low self-impression of our abilities, then we find ourselves less likely to move out of our comfort zone to attempt new things. Handle this way, problems tend to perpetuate themselves. God wants us to have healthy self-esteem in order to lead blessed lives and in order for us to bless others.

Thematically, this text draws us in to thinking about God’s nature. The people needlessly quarreled and tested God, somehow doubting that the God who delivered them from Egypt would also supply their physical needs. It stands as a reminder to us that God has provided for us before in many wonderful ways; why then would God not continue to provide for us? When times get tough we, too, have a tendency to quarrel and to test God, or to doubt God. We are reminded that God will continue to provide, just as has always been done before.

As North Americans, commercialism pervades our lives. Commercials urge us to buy products we never knew existed, let alone, knew we needed. We are influenced by television at home, radio in the car, billboards along the roadside and flashin signs over the shopping malls. We have been trained since birth to expect, desire and buy the newest product. Each class and culture has its own understandings of what is necessity and what is luxury. Commercialism does not distinguish between these artificial barriers; instead, it manipulates cultureal differences to improve advertisements. Because of its all-pervasive nature, the best way to fully understand just how much this one concept controls our actions and our faith is to travel to a developing country or region in the United States. Since this is not always possible, a creative conversation is the next best thing.

The subject of denominations lies just beneath the surface of everyday church life. It does not come up often in conversation but it is something we need and want to know about. Most of your youth have friends who belong to other denominations. Many, fearing that revealing or talking about this mystery will interfere with the friendsship, rarely raise the issue. This may be good for maintaining friendships but it only serves to place more barriers between members of the "Body of Christ." So be brave and know that this is an important issue to talk about.

For this session you do not need to know all the denominations and every detail about each one.
