As North Americans, commercialism pervades our lives. Commercials urge us to buy products we never knew existed, let alone, knew we needed. We are influenced by television at home, radio in the car, billboards along the roadside and flashin signs over the shopping malls. We have been trained since birth to expect, desire and buy the newest product. Each class and culture has its own understandings of what is necessity and what is luxury. Commercialism does not distinguish between these artificial barriers; instead, it manipulates cultureal differences to improve advertisements. Because of its all-pervasive nature, the best way to fully understand just how much this one concept controls our actions and our faith is to travel to a developing country or region in the United States. Since this is not always possible, a creative conversation is the next best thing.

Denominations by Bill Spangler-Dunning

The subject of denominations lies just beneath the surface of everyday church life. It does not come up often in conversation but it is something we need and want to know about. Most of your youth have friends who belong to other denominations. Many, fearing that revealing or talking about this mystery will interfere with the friendsship, rarely raise the issue. This may be good for maintaining friendships but it only serves to place more barriers between members of the "Body of Christ." So be brave and know that this is an important issue to talk about.

For this session you do not need to know all the denominations and every detail about each one.

Understanding ourselves in light of other religions has been difficult for Christianity from the beginning. In the our early development, we struggled to determine how we were distinct from Judaism, from which we emerged. Eventually, some Christians concluded that Christianity had to be the only way to be saved. Christians have also done battle (literally!) with other religions. In the Medieval Crusades, Christians attacked Muslims living around Jerusalem, believing that God wanted them to defend the homeland of their Christian faith. Christian missionaries settling the Americas often believed that enslaving natives was necessary to convert them from naturalist religions. During the Holocaust of World War II, some Christians believed that it was okay to kill Jews because they were no longer God’s Chosen race. Notably, some Christians have believed just the opposite! This seems to be a valid conversation for today as well!

Cliques not only plague youth groups; they can divide the church as well! Sociologists have done studies on gorup dynamics and concluded that we often have to work hard to join a group. Once we are in, e fight just as hard to keep others out! This conversation is critical to any group! It involves an inpossible group building games as well. Enjoy!

A Christmas Story by Bert Burns

A Christmas Play written for a short message in morning worship including children, ages Nursery-5th grade. It uses well known Christmas carols, which are sung by the children and the congregation, to jumpstart the dialog which follows.
